Chapter 5

An hour later they pulled into the garage of an impossibly tall skyscraper. She had been able to see the building from her old apartment, but she had never been there in person. Climbing off the bike she battled a wave of dizziness – it was so different from where they had just been. The cold confinement of the city and its monolithic buildings seemed unfamiliar after so long in their peaceful woods. She left the helmet on the bike and they took the elevator to the top floor. There was no apartment door, the lift just stopped and Calvin produced a key to open the doors.

Carrie stepped off into a different world. It was the stark opposite of the cabin. Sleek white textures guided the eye to a massive window that looked out over the city… or normally would. They were above the clouds, and the stars shined brightly over a grey sea.

Calvin disappeared around the corner.

“What the hell, Perry?!”

“Calvin? Oh shit. Calvin.”

Carry considered the white hallway. Shit. Someone else was there. She considered hiding, and realized there was nowhere to go! All the furniture was overly simple in the trendy modern way, and there didn’t seem to be any closets or rooms! Just sleek, open space.

She tiptoed towards the sound.

“They’re looking for you, man! You’re all over the news. Right next to Jonathan. Where the hell have you been!”

“Don’t worry about it. Carrie?!” he called.

She blushed and took the final few steps into the room.

“Who the hell is that?!” the man shouted.

He was short, balding. His face was framed with giant black rimmed glasses, and he was dressed more like a kid in his mom’s basement than a man who would own a castle in the sky.

“This is Carrie.”

She held out her hand.

“Nice to meet you.”

“What the hell is she doing here? Are you out of your fucking mind?!”

Carrie eyed Calvin and he held of up his hands, trying to defuse the situation.

“Let’s try that again. This is Carrie.”

The bald little man eyed the hand like it was a venomous snake, but took it all the same.

“There we go.” He said “You know all those favors I’ve been saving up?”

“Yea.”

“I’m going to need to cash in on a few of them.”

“Okay…” the bald man followed.

“Perry?”

“Yea, Cal.”

“Do you trust me?”

The question seemed to insult the man.

“Of course.”

“You need to believe me when I tell you I had nothing to do with this.”

There was a long pause, and the sleek white kitchen was silent.

“I believe you.” He finally managed.

“Good!” Calvin took the man’s shiny head in his hands, kissed it, then rubbed it like a magic eight ball. “I need you to look into it. Anything that can prove I wasn’t involved.”

“I did that weeks ago, Cal. You were always careful to cover your tracks – which made it pretty easy for them to delete or alter what few records there were left.”

“Them?”

“Well obviously someone is behind all of this. If we are going to clear your name, the easiest way might be tracking down who’s actually responsible.
